Choosing the correct ground reference

The black probe does not merely complete the measurement. It defines what the displayed voltage means.

Which potential difference must this test reveal? Choose the reference only after answering that question.

Use it as a stable global reference when checking the complete supply or ground path between the battery and the circuit.

Useful when the body is part of the actual current path. Its quality must be confirmed under representative load.

Use the circuit’s own reference when evaluating a sensor signal whose meaning depends on that local ground.

Keep the connection short and electrically relevant. A remote reference can add loop area, noise and misleading voltage differences.

If the reference itself may be suspect, measure its voltage drop while current flows instead of assuming it is at 0 V.
